The Association for the Promotion of Christian Archaeology in Austria was founded in spring 1995. It is based at the Institute for Classical Archaeology at the University of Vienna, Franz Klein-Gasse 1, A -1190 Vienna. The president is Dr. Renate Pillinger, retired professor of Early Christian Archaeology at the Institute of Classical Archaeology at the University of Vienna, and the vice-president is Priv.-Doz. MMag. Dr. Andreas Pülz, Head of the Department of Classical Studies at the Austrian Archaeological Institute.
As of April 12, 2024, the association had 340 members in Austria and abroad. Its aim is to promote and disseminate scientific research into Christian Archaeology in Austria. It pursues exclusively and directly charitable purposes. This also includes projects by Austrian researchers abroad. The results are documented and published in the form of scientific publications and information material (city maps, postcards, etc.) not only for specialist colleagues, but also for a broader, scientifically interested public. The purpose of the association is currently achieved primarily through the co-publication and editorial supervision of the journal Mitteilungen zur Christlichen Archäologie (MiChA for short), research work on the Paulus Grotto in Ephesus and late antique-early Christian textiles, and by holding lectures. Subsequently, excavations, the organization of conferences, guided tours and excursions or trips abroad are planned as an extension of the activities.
