The research carried out over the past 10 years has provided important new data concerning the urban setting of Caričin Grad and the territory of the city. The latter has rarely been the subject of previous studies. Thanks to LiDAR prospecting, geophysical studies, excavations and field surveys, new parts of the city have been revealed - the large suburbs, the plans of the surrounding forts, the country churches and the route of the aqueduct. New data was also obtained for Rujkovac, a major fortress 6 km south of Caričin Grad.
The unearthed remains of the city correspond to the description of Justiniana Prima by Procopius, who had mentioned numerous churches, magistrates' houses, large stoas, beautiful market squares, fountains, streets, baths, shops. The new research also revealed the housing quarters and the many houses built in the porticoes and public spaces in the second half of the 6th century, proof of the disintegration of the original town planning.
Caričin Grad represents a precious testimony of the urban setting of an Early Byzantine city built in the interior of Illyricum, whose existence was largely marked by barbarian incursions, depopulation and economic decline.
