As early as 1906, O. Benndorf mentioned a 22-step-long gallery with numerous graffiti on the northern slope of the Bülbüldag, located approx. 100 m above the plain and extending into the rock, as a place of worship of the "hidden Mother of God".In 1955, F. Miltner carried out archaeological investigations at the site for the first time. He named the cave - probably due to an incised inscription "Paul, help your servant..." - Paul's grotto.The monument has been studied again since 1996. After an initial clean-up and the true-to-scale removal of the approximately 300 inscriptions on the walls of the cave passage on plastic sheeting, as well as a precise building survey (ground plan and elevation as well as building description), several layers of wall painting were unexpectedly discovered under the all-covering whitewash in 1998 (photo: N. Gail).The excellently preserved depiction of THEOKLI(a) and the apostle PAVLOS in front of a house with THE(kla), with painted inscription, aroused particular interest. It is a completely unique iconographic realization of the legend recorded in the Acta Pauli et Theclae. It is also currently the only monumental evidence of the Apostle Paul in Ephesus. In 2003, a total of five layers of painting were uncovered in the southernmost part of the cave, which deserve no less attention.
