The Byzantine church was littered with inscriptions: not just the official dedicatory and liturgical texts commissioned by the church hierarchy, but also the small and personal additions of pilgrims. These inscriptions – known as "graffiti" – provide one of the most intimate insights into the everyday religious practice of the Byzantine individual. This paper will examine the findings of the Epigraphies of Pious Travel project, which centres pilgrims' graffiti from the eastern Mediterranean in order to see how language, image and space intersected with these personal expressions of faith.
