Capital of Crete and Cyrenaica, then seat of the archbishopric, Gortyn retains a leading role among the great cities of the Mediterranean. A long history of archaeological investigations, from the end of the 19th century to the present day, makes it possible to follow the development of the town over almost a millennium. With regard to the Late Antique and Byzantine phases, phenomena concomitant with the process of Christianisation, such as the abandonment of the main sanctuaries close to the Praeorium, and the building of churches, can be highlighted. A real Christian dimension was evident only from the 5th century onwards, and especially in the 6th, a period to which the episcopal complex in the area of a modern village called Mitropolis can be referred, as well as a continuity of the public monumental apparatus. The situation changes at the end of the 7th century, and here too the two poles - secular and religious - of the Praetorium quarter and Mitropolis, show different aspects of the settlement transformation before the Arab conquest of the city.
