The East Aegean islands and the littoral of Western Anatolia display in Prehistoric times one of the most active maritime landscapes of the Aegean, as rich data sets from older and in particular from more recent excavations indicate (e.g. Heraion, Miletus). In this lecture material culture will be employed for evaluating settlement patterns, political organization, society, economy and symbolism. By defining the identity of islanders versus mainlanders in this part of the Aegean, issues such as changing patterns of interaction and mobility within and beyond the East Aegean from the Chalcolithic through the Middle Bronze Age will be debated.
