Basema Hamarneh is Professor of Classical Archaeology (Late Antiquity and Early Christianity) at the University of Vienna. She is co-director and editorial board member of the Mitteilungen zur Chirstlichen Archäologie.
Prior to this, Basema Hamarneh, thought at the Center of Middle Eastern studies at Milano, at the University of Enna and the University of Milano. She recieved her first PhD degree in Archaeology and Postclassical Antiquity at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, she completed her second PhD at the Pontificio Instituto di Archeologia Cristiana in Rome, with the title “Christian Topography and Rural Settlements in Jordan during the Byzantine and Islamic periods 5th-9th centuries”. She holds the Habilitation award in Archaeology from the Italian Ministry of University and Education. She has participated and directed archaeological excavations in Jordan and Italy since 1986.
Her research focuses on urban and rural settlements in the Late Antique and Early Christian periods, the Christianisation of Roman Castra, and early Christian Monuments, as well as archaeology and the visual and material culture of Late Antique, Early Christian/Byzantine, and Early Islamic Near East.

Michaela Löffler-Leutgeb is a PhD student at the Department of Classical Archaeology, MA student of History at the University of Vienna, she holds a BA and an MA degree in Classical Archaeology (University of Vienna). In her master’s thesis she focused on the visual legacies of women in ecclesiastical spaces, with focus on mosaic inscriptions of benefactresses in late Antique Arabia and Palaestine. She participated in archaeological excavation projects in Jordan, Egypt, Italy, and Austria.

Thomas Leutgeb is currently completing his master`s degree in Classical Archaeology at the University of Vienna, where he also finished his bachelor`s degree. He participated at archaeological excavations in Italy, Austria, Egypt, Israel, and Jordan.
Since the campaigns of 2021 and 2022 he is responsible for the digital and non-invasive research at al-Jumayil.

Franziska Male is a current master`s student at the University of Vienna, where she also concluded her bachelor studies in Classical Archaeology. For the excavation campaigns of 2022 and 2023 she is the tutor of the training excavation. Male participated in several excavation campaigns in Austria and in Jordan.
