Metauros Archaeological Project (MAP)

Metauros is located in Calabria, Southern Italy, and is known as a Greek city of the archaic and classical period. The necropolis of the city was uncovered in a series of salvage excavations between the 1950s and 1980s, under the direction first of A. De Franciscis and later of C. Sabbione, with around 1600 individual graves being excavated.

Until now, the finds from the necropolis have not been systematically studied or published. The Metauros Archaeological Project (MAP) was initiated by staff of the Institute of Classical Archaeology in 2022 with the aim of studying, documenting, and publishing this material. We are grateful to the Italian Ministry of Culture, and to the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio per la Citta’ Metropolitana di Reggio Calabria e la Provincia di Vibo Valentia.
