Irad Malkin is a leading scholar of Greek colonisation and the archaic Greek world. He is particularly interested in post-colonialism, network theory, religion, and oral poetics. This talk reflects on ideas first published his important 2011 book, A Small Greek World: Networks in the Ancient Mediterranean, examining how cultic and other types of interactions between geographically dispersed communities contributed to the formation of Greek identities in the western Mediterranean.
