Researches on the provenience of Roman African ceramics, in continued progress since the late 80s, now make it possible to better distinguish between the amphora, tableware and lamp production of the different African regions. In this process, the link between archaeological methods and archaeometric ones was decisive. We will provide some examples of these improvements in Tripolitania, Byzacena, Zeugitana, and Numidia. Such investigations are in line with the modern notion of traceability, very much in fashion in the consumption field. Applied to the archaeological documentation, this notion implies an effective labelling (i.e. an efficient typology), the indication of a manufacturing date (presumed), and a control of geographical origin, which are the only useful ways of allowing a good interpretation of the distribution of the African wares.
