In 2024, the universities of Seville, Cologne, Kiel and Groningen started a collaborative project to investigate the history of the Roman town of Carissa Aurelia (ancient Baetica, Spain) in its micro-regional context. While the project combines a suite of investigations targeting both the town and surrounding countryside, in this paper I present the approaches and first results of the fieldwork in Carissa‘s rural surroundings. Besides exploring what they tell us about local developments I will also outline how this kind of micro-regional study can, through a comparative perspective, help addressing various key topics within Roman studies.
