Theseus-Ariadne-Dionysos: ein neuer apulischer Chous aus Metapont
The paper presents an unusual red-figure Apulian chous of the mid-4th century BCE, excavated at Metaponto in 2008 and not previously published. The scene, known from only one earlier Apulian vase, depicts Theseus abandoning Ariadne on Naxos as Dionysos arrives to the rescue on his panther-drawn chariot. A very few Attic vases of the 5th c. depict versions of the story, and it was the subject of a fresco in the sanctuary of Dionysos Eleuthereus in Athens described by Pausanias. The new vase, in addition to providing valuable new evidence for the transmission of this Athenian myth to the West, raises questions about the prevalence in South Italy of the chous – a shape invented in Athens and, by the late 5th c., associated almost exclusively with a festival of Dionysos.
