The question about the impact of Roman expansion and colonization on the conquered land has often focused on the coastal areas and flatlands. The unsaid assumption is often that Roman society developed rather in the well-connected lowlands, and the effects of Roman imperialism on the uplands have often been seen as marginal, negative and indirect. However, the archaeological data to support or refute such a view is very incomplete, especially for the mountainous and forested areas. In this paper, I will discuss the material evidence for changes that accompanied Roman expansionism in non-urbanised highlands in the southern Apennines. I will focus in particular on landscape archaeological methodology, presenting some recent experiments to unlock inaccessible, mountainous landscapes.
